Today yet again, another standalone job which pictures will not be used. It gets frustrating, so frustrating. A colleague mentioned something that just hit me, I hadn’t really thought of this before. The desk is a male-dominated territory. Only 6 out of say, 24, photojournalists are female. The guys get relegated all the interesting army, tough-it-out jobs, or other exciting events all the time. Why don’t the girls get them?
I mean, as much as I love shooting for MYB or Sunlife, what happens to the assignments that are more challenging? The other male intern got to go to Pulau Ubin for an Outward Bound shoot (if I’m right), how come I don’t get those kind of assignments? It isn’t his fault or anything, but I was wondering, if I was a guy instead, would I be getting more action-packed shoot with tons of photo opportunities or would I still be shooting crowds at the anniversary sales of (insert any departmental franchise you can think of)? Or is it because I just CMI (cannot make it)?
Alright, I shan’t complain anymore, I’m already so fortunate to be interning here.
We watched “History Boys” a couple of nights ago and this really stood out.
Hector: The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.
I could live only in fictional worlds and be content. Reading makes me feel so… happy. Like a little kid who just had a huge cone of ice cream. Wait, I still feel really happy when I have a huge cone of ice cream. I love ice cream. Digression… I finished The Historian two days ago. That book just took forever to be done with. Interestingly, it seems that the inspiration of Dracula by Bram Stoker comes from a vicious source- Drakulya also known as Vlad Ţepeş the Impaler.
Most authorities believe the character of Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel was based upon the historical figure Vlad Ţepeş (pronounced tse-pesh), who intermittently ruled an area of the Balkans called Wallachia in the mid 15th century. He was also called by the names Vlad III, Vlad Dracula and Vlad the Impaler. The word Tepes stands for “impaler” and was so coined because of Vlad’s propensity to punish victims by impaling them on stakes, then displaying them publicly to frighten his enemies and to warn would-be transgressors of his strict moral code. He is credited with killing between 40,000 to 100,000 people in this fashion.
Scary sia! It was a good read though, I learnt much about the Balkan history in the 15th century as well as some on the Ottomans and Turks. Makes me feel so learned. Act only la.
Rock for Wayne is on tonight and I’m rostered to take pictures. Ticket sales have apparently reached more than a thousand sold, I wonder how the Far East Pavillion will be able to fit so many. It’s going to be a great gig nonetheless, am really looking forward to Westgrand Boulevard (love you boys), The Great Spy Experiment, A Vacant Affair, Caracal and The Fire Fight. That’s pretty much 3/4 of the line-up.
See you guys there
